Built in the 1880s, The Turret House had evolved over time, with extensions added in the 1980s and 1990s. Each chapter of the home reflected the needs of its owners at the time, but by 2019, when we purchased the property, it needed a fresh perspective and a full renovation to suit modern family life.
The house had plenty of charm and potential, but also presented a number of practical challenges. The layout had become a little disjointed over the years, with no central hallway and rooms erratically flowing one into the next. With two electricity fuse boxes and outdated plumbing, it was clear the home needed significant work behind the scenes as well.
We were a young family of six, so the renovation focused on creating a more cohesive, functional layout that could adapt as the family grew. Careful planning with the Architect allowed us to make the best use of the existing footprint while introducing flow, storage, and comfort throughout the home.
Just as important as improving how the house worked was preserving its original character. We brought back features that gave a nod to its cottage roots—exposed Belfast brick, solid wood floors sourced at a fraction of the usual price, and budget-friendly materials that delivered high impact without overspending. Every euro was accounted for, and thoughtful choices throughout the project helped us stay on budget while still achieving a high-end result.
This project was all about balance—making the home practical and welcoming for modern living, while holding onto the soul of the original cottage. The result is a warm, inviting space that the family can grow into, with real long-term value and a strong connection to its history.
